FLUOR TO MODERNIZE SMELTING FACILITY IN PERU

ALISO VIEJO - 09/18/04 - The Fluor Corp. has begun work on the first copper smelter modernization of its kind in South America.

The smelter - owned and operated by the Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) near Ilo, Peru - is being modernized to comply with environmental emissions regulations mandated by the Peruvian government and will produce copper that can be sent on to other facilities for further processing.

When completed in 2006, the modernized facility will reportedly be the first copper smelter in South America to use ISASMELT technology, a modern bath- smelting process for the production of non-ferrous metals.

The construction is part of a contract that Fluor was awarded to provide engineering, procurement, and construction management services on the project for SPCC - one of Peru's largest companies and one of the ten largest copper producers in the world.

The California-headquartered FORTUNE 500 company booked the award in the first quarter of 2004 and is managing the project out of its offices in Santiago, Chile.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.
