PAYPAL INTRODUCES PAYMENT SERVICE IN FRANCE

SAN FRANCISCO - 08/26/04 - Internet users in France now have the option of sending and receiving money using the PayPal online payment service, according to press reports.

The service has been integrated into eBay's French auction property and has been given its own local Internet site.

PayPal's French debut follows the service's recent introduction in Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

PayPal, which is owned by California-based eBay, said the French launch came in response to demand the company saw for a secure online payments service for eBay in France.

The French-language website offers users the ability to perform online transactions with any other PayPal members worldwide in five currencies: the euro, the US dollar, the Canadian dollar, the Japanese yen, and the British pound.

Although offline payments and credit card transactions are the preferred payment methods in Europe, the growing number of Internet users in the region offers e-payment providers a window of opportunity to make inroads into the market, according to a report from IDC.

However, the researcher predicted that due to large cross-border value-added taxes in Europe, which range from 16% to 25%, many users will limit their transactions to national and local language sites.

PayPal currently claims to have more than 50 million members in 45 countries.
