CANADIAN AIRCRAFT FOUGHT SOCAL FIRES

LOS ANGELES - 10/31/03 -A pair of Canadian-made "Super Scooper" water-dropping aircraft played a critical role in the fight to beat-down the wildfires that ravaged Southern California.

The stubby, yellow-bodied CL-215 "Super Scooper" aircraft are leased during the fall fire season to the Los Angeles County Fire Department and are based at Van Nuys Airport in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, just northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

The aircraft are unique in their ability to skim over the surface of a lake, river or sheltered bay, at about 80 mph, and "scoop" upwards of 1,200 gallons of water into its drop tanks. They have an operational "air-time" of four hours.

Designed to specifically fight forest fires, the aircraft cost about $3.5 million each and are manufactured in Quebec, Canada, by Canadair Ltd.

In addition to California, the twin-engined CL-215 amphibians are in regular firefighting service in North Carolina and Minnesota, as well as the Canadian Provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland, and the Yukon.

Overseas, "Super Scoopers" are in service in France, Italy, Greece, Spain, Croatia, Thailand, and Venezuela.
